When you need a coffee that feels like an occasion, a ten-minute escape from downtown’s office towers or a polished spot for a business catch-up, Bel Café is the answer. Chef David Hawksworth opened it in 2013 inside the Rosewood Hotel Georgia, next to his flagship Hawksworth Restaurant, and named it after his wife, Annabel. More than a decade later it remains downtown Vancouver’s most elegant everyday café.

Location and getting there
Bel Café sits on the ground floor of the 1927 Hotel Georgia building, now the Rosewood Hotel Georgia, at the corner of West Georgia and Howe. The Vancouver Art Gallery and Robson Square are across the street, Pacific Centre is a block away and Vancouver City Centre Station is around the corner. It’s about as central as downtown gets.
What Bel Café offers
- Coffee: When it opened, Bel Café worked with Vancouver roaster 49th Parallel on a dedicated house espresso designed to shift subtly through the year while keeping a balance of acidity and sweetness. Expect careful espresso drinks and drip.
- Pastries and macarons: The case is the draw: viennoiserie, cakes, tarts and colourful macarons that make good small gifts.
- Light meals: Gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads and breakfast items made with the polish you’d expect from a Hawksworth kitchen.
- Tea: A selection of artisanal teas for non-coffee drinkers.
The vibe
Bright, chic and efficient, styled after the cafés of Europe. It’s a smallish room (around 20 seats when it opened), so expect a mix of hotel guests, gallery visitors and office workers grabbing something to go. Service is quick and professional. It feels dressed up without being stuffy.
What to order
- Morning: A cappuccino and a croissant or seasonal viennoiserie.
- Lunch: A sandwich and a latte.
- Gift: A box of macarons for the office or a host.
Who it’s best for
Bel Café is the downtown pick for impressing a client, meeting someone visiting the city, or giving yourself a treat during a shopping day. It’s less ideal for long laptop sessions (seating is limited) or for budget coffee runs.
How it compares with nearby cafes
For a coffee-first experience nearby, 49th Parallel on Thurlow is a ten-minute walk and pairs coffee with doughnuts and savoury plates. For French pastry with a tea salon, Ladurée on Robson is the closest comparison. For chocolate, walk to TC Mink near Waterfront.
Tips
- Weekday mornings and lunch are busiest with office workers. Mid-afternoon is calmer.
- The hotel also has a lobby lounge and rooftop bar if you want to stay longer.
- Bel Café is a daytime spot; check closing times before a late visit.
