West Vancouver does seaside coffee better than anywhere else in the region. Its two villages, Ambleside and Dundarave, sit right on the water along Marine Drive and are connected by the Centennial Seawall. Get a coffee in one, walk to the other, and you’ll understand why locals rarely leave.
Ambleside
- Cafe Crema (1495 Bellevue Avenue): An Ambleside landmark with outdoor seating looking out toward the water. Packed on sunny days and still relaxing.
- Savary Island Pie Company (1533 Marine Drive): A West Van institution for pies, baking and coffee. Locals buy whole pies for family dinners.
- Bellevue and Marine Drive: More small cafes and bakeries line the blocks between 13th and 19th Streets. Take your cup to Ambleside Beach or the pier.
Dundarave
Dundarave is the smaller, quieter village to the west, with a pier and a beach of its own.
- Temper Chocolate & Pastry (2409 Marine Drive): Swiss-modern pastry and chocolate with espresso that locals call the best in West Van. The almond croissant is the move.
- Delany’s Coffee House (2424 Marine Drive): Unpretentious and well loved, a Dundarave fixture for years.
- Bakeries along Marine Drive: Several European-style bakeries and bistros make Dundarave a great place for a long, slow breakfast.
The seawall walk
The Centennial Seawall runs about two kilometres between Ambleside and Dundarave, with views of Stanley Park, Lions Gate Bridge and the freighters in English Bay. It’s one of the best coffee walks in Metro Vancouver, and it’s flat.
Horseshoe Bay
If you’re catching a ferry to Nanaimo, Bowen Island or the Sunshine Coast, arrive early and grab coffee in the village rather than in the terminal. Bay Street has cafes, a bakery and views of the boats. Whytecliff Park is a short drive away if you have time.
Park Royal and Caulfeild
Park Royal shopping centre has Starbucks and other chains, plus newer cafes in The Village at Park Royal. Caulfeild Village near Cypress has a neighbourhood cafe or two for skiers coming down the mountain.
