Modus takes its name from the Latin for “way” or “method,” which tells you how its founders approach coffee. Sharif and Jessica spent three years roasting for wholesale clients and two years hunting for a storefront before opening on West Broadway in 2015. A decade later, Coffee Roastery Modus is one of Mount Pleasant’s specialty anchors, and Time Out’s 2026 ranking of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods suggested starting a perfect Mount Pleasant day here.

Location and getting there

What Modus offers
- Single-origin coffee: The heart of the business, roasted to show what each farm and process tastes like.
- Espresso and filter: A tight menu of espresso drinks and brewed coffee, made carefully.
- Food: Baked goods and artisan sandwiches, and over the years Modus has run weekend brunch programs with guest chefs and evening pop-ups that turn the café into a casual after-hours spot.
- Beans and brew guides: Bags to take home and guides for brewing them.
The vibe
Cozy, minimal and focused. It’s a small room with a loyal crowd of regulars and baristas who’ll happily explain what’s on. It’s comfortable for a short laptop session outside busy times, and the Wi-Fi works.
A second location
Modus has expanded with a larger roastery café in Burnaby, where about half the space is dedicated to its growing roasting operation. See our Burnaby cafe guide.
What to order
- First visit: A filter coffee of the current single origin.
- Milk drink: A cortado or flat white.
- Take-home: A bag of whatever you liked best.
Who it’s best for
Curious coffee drinkers, home brewers buying beans, and anyone who wants a calm alternative to the busier Main Street cafés.
How it compares
Compared with 49th Parallel on Main, Modus is smaller, quieter and more single-origin focused. Compared with Milano, it’s lighter and fruitier in style. Visiting both makes a great comparison.
