Vancouver takes coffee personally. A wet climate, a long Italian espresso tradition on Commercial Drive and a generation of obsessive roasters have made the city one of the best places in North America to drink coffee. The catch: the scene is spread across a dozen neighbourhoods, and it changes constantly. 2026 alone saw beloved names close, including Matchstick, which wound down its cafes after 14 years. This guide is our starting map, with a deeper guide for each neighbourhood.
The short list: Vancouver coffee institutions
- Revolver (325 Cambie Street, Gastown): The city’s benchmark specialty bar, with rotating roasters from around the world and tasting flights. Our full Revolver profile.
- 49th Parallel: The Vancouver roaster that helped define the city’s style, with cafes on Main Street, West 4th in Kitsilano and Thurlow downtown, most paired with Lucky’s Doughnuts.
- Nemesis: Hospitality-first coffee in architecturally striking rooms. Start with Gastown or Great Northern Way.
- Prototype (883 East Hastings): The city’s most experimental cafe, plus waffle doughnuts. Read our profile.
- Caffè Calabria (1745 Commercial Drive): An old-school Italian espresso bar opened in 1976. The Drive’s living history.
- Milano Coffee: A Vancouver roaster known for its award-winning espresso blends, with cafes in Mount Pleasant and Gastown.

Chains in Vancouver
Starbucks closed several Metro Vancouver stores in 2025 and 2026 (see our Starbucks closures report), but it’s still everywhere downtown. Vancouver-born chains are often the better choice: JJ Bean, Caffè Artigiano, Bean Around the World, Blenz and Waves. See our Starbucks cheat sheet and Tim Hortons guide.
How to plan a Vancouver coffee crawl
- Pick one neighbourhood. Gastown, Main Street and Commercial Drive are all walkable with three or four great stops each.
- Go early. Many independent cafes close by 5 p.m.
- Buy beans. Most specialty cafes sell bags from their roaster. Check the roast date.
- Learn the lingo. Our espresso drinks guide covers cortados, flat whites and the London Fog, a Vancouver original.
