Metro Vancouver Cafe Guide: The Best Coffee in All 21 Municipalities, City by City

Metro Vancouver is one of the best coffee regions in North America, but it’s spread across a lot of ground: 21 municipalities, an electoral area and a treaty First Nation, from the mountains of the North Shore to the beaches of White Rock and the farms of Langley and Pitt Meadows. Each city has its own coffee personality. Vancouver has the specialty bars; Richmond has Hong Kong-style cafes and Vietnamese drip coffee; Burquitlam has Korean dessert cafes; Fort Langley has village roasters; the North Shore has post-hike doughnuts.

This page is the starting point for everything on Vancouver Cafe. Pick a city, a neighbourhood or a coffee topic, and follow the links into our detailed guides and individual cafe profiles.

Start with the City of Vancouver

The city proper has the highest density of independent cafes in the region, and the most distinct coffee neighbourhoods. Our Vancouver cafe guide is the overview; then dive into a neighbourhood:

  • Gastown: Revolver, Timbertrain, Nemesis and Vancouver’s oldest streets.
  • Downtown: hotel cafes, patisseries and commuter espresso.
  • Yaletown: bakery cafes and the False Creek seawall.
  • Coal Harbour: waterfront coffee on the way to Stanley Park.
  • Mount Pleasant and Main Street: the city’s coffee capital.
  • Commercial Drive: Italian espresso bars and modern roasters.
  • Kitsilano: West 4th, Broadway and post-beach coffee.

North Shore

Coffee here is built around the outdoors: a cup before Grouse, Lynn Canyon or Quarry Rock, and a treat after.

  • City of North Vancouver: Lower Lonsdale, the Shipyards and the SeaBus.
  • District of North Vancouver: Deep Cove, Lynn Valley and Edgemont Village.
  • West Vancouver: Ambleside, Dundarave and the seawall walk.

Burnaby, New Westminster and Richmond

The inner suburbs along the SkyTrain lines mix independent roasters with some of the region’s best Asian cafes.

  • Burnaby: Burnaby Heights on Hastings, Metrotown plazas and Edmonds roasters.
  • New Westminster: Columbia Street, the Quay and Uptown.
  • Richmond: Steveston Village, City Centre and Hong Kong-style cafes.

Tri-Cities

  • Coquitlam: Burquitlam Korean cafes and City Centre specialty coffee.
  • Port Coquitlam: Shaughnessy Street and the PoCo Trail.
  • Port Moody: St. Johns Street, Newport Village and Rocky Point.

South of the Fraser

  • Surrey: City Centre, Fleetwood, Cloverdale and South Surrey.
  • White Rock: Marine Drive waterfront and uptown Johnston Road.
  • Delta: Ladner Village, Tsawwassen and North Delta.
  • City and Township of Langley: Fort Langley, Langley City and Walnut Grove.

Ridge Meadows

  • Maple Ridge: Port Haney, downtown and coffee before Golden Ears.
  • Pitt Meadows: Harris Road, Osprey Village and the dikes.

How Metro Vancouver’s coffee scene differs by area

Area Coffee personality Don’t miss
Vancouver Specialty bars, roasters, dense walkable neighbourhoods A tasting flight in Gastown, a Main Street cafe crawl
North Shore Outdoor-adjacent cafes, village coffee Coffee after Quarry Rock in Deep Cove
Burnaby and Tri-Cities Korean and Japanese cafes, local roasters, mall chains The North Road dessert cafes
Richmond Hong Kong-style cafes, Vietnamese coffee, dessert cafes Milk tea and a pineapple bun, Steveston coffee walk
South of the Fraser Growing indie scene, beach towns, drive-thrus Fort Langley village, White Rock pier
Ridge Meadows Community cafes, farm-country coffee A thermos before Golden Ears or Pitt Lake

Cafe profiles

Alongside the city guides, we write individual profiles of independent cafes: where they are, what they serve, what they feel like and what to order. Browse them all in the cafe profiles directory, or start with Gastown favourites like Revolver, Timbertrain and Nelson the Seagull.

Coffee chains in Metro Vancouver

Independents get most of the attention, but chains are part of daily life here. Vancouver-born chains like JJ Bean, Caffè Artigiano, Blenz, Waves and Bean Around the World are everywhere, alongside Starbucks and Tim Hortons. Our Starbucks drink cheat sheet and Tim Hortons drink guide help you order a better cup, and our news coverage tracks changes like the Metro Vancouver Starbucks closures.

Coffee 101

Want to understand what you’re drinking? Our evergreen guides explain the basics in plain language:

  • Coffee bean types explained: Arabica, Robusta, varieties, processing and origins.
  • Coffee roast levels: light, medium and dark, and what they change.
  • Espresso drinks guide: from cortado to London Fog, a Vancouver original.
  • Coffee brewing methods: pour-over, French press, AeroPress and more.

How we choose cafes

We focus on independent cafes that locals actually go back to, plus the chains that matter for everyday life. We check addresses, recent openings and closures against current local sources, and we mark every page with the date it was last checked. Cafes in Metro Vancouver open and close often, so if you spot something out of date, tell us and we’ll fix it.
