Langley is two municipalities: the compact City of Langley, centred on downtown Fraser Highway, and the much larger Township of Langley that surrounds it, including Fort Langley, Walnut Grove, Willoughby, Murrayville and Aldergrove. Together they have one of the best small-town coffee scenes in Metro Vancouver. Some say Fort Langley, per capita, might have more good coffee than anywhere in BC.
Fort Langley (Township of Langley)
A heritage village on the Fraser River with a national historic site, antique shops and very good coffee.
- Republica Coffee Roasters (9203 Glover Road): Tucked into Fort Langley’s Gasoline Alley, this local roaster focuses on fair-trade organic coffee. Cozy inside, nice patio outside, and great beans to take home.
- Wendel’s Bookstore & Cafe (9233 Glover Road): A bookshop and cafe in one, with a full breakfast and lunch menu. A Fort Langley institution.
- Sabà Cafe (Mavis Avenue): At the far end of Mavis, with good coffee and a brunch and dinner menu. Some regulars have been coming weekly for more than a decade.
- Blacksmith Bakery: Bread, pastry and coffee, ideal with a walk along the river or to the Fort.
Tip: Fort Langley gets busy on summer weekends and during filming days (it’s a popular TV and movie location). Weekday mornings are best.
Langley City: the Fraser Highway one-way
The few blocks of one-way Fraser Highway in downtown Langley City have become one of Metro Vancouver’s quiet food destinations, with new coffee shops and restaurants opening over the past couple of years.
- Twins Coffee: A popular local cafe with breakfast and coffee.
- Black Tiger Coffee Co. and Coastal Coffee House: Two more names locals bring up when talking about the best cups in the City.
Walnut Grove
- Mozart Bakery & Café and The Wired Monk (88th Avenue): Neighbourhood options in Walnut Grove’s main commercial area, handy before a walk to Fort Langley on the trail.
Willoughby, Murrayville and Aldergrove
Fast-growing Willoughby along 200th and 208th Streets has new cafes in its town centres. Murrayville and Aldergrove are quieter, with community cafes and farm stands. In fall, combine a coffee with a farm visit or a winery in the Township.
Chains in Langley
Willowbrook, the Langley Bypass, 200th Street and Highway 1 interchanges are full of Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Blenz and Waves. Useful for commuters, less interesting than the villages.
