Starbucks Drink Recipe Cheat Sheet: Sizes, Shots, Pumps and Builds (Canada Edition)

There are more Starbucks locations in Metro Vancouver than most of us could name, and most of us still order the same drink every time. Partly that’s habit. Partly it’s because the menu board doesn’t tell you how a drink is made, so changing anything feels like a gamble. This cheat sheet fixes that. Once you know how many shots and pumps go into each size, you can order exactly what you want at any counter from Lonsdale Quay to Willowbrook.

A note on accuracy: these are the standard builds Starbucks uses in Canadian stores. Recipes, seasonal drinks and the menu itself change (Starbucks Canada cut roughly a fifth of its menu in 2025), so treat the app as the final word for any one store.

Starbucks cup sizes

Size Volume Notes
Short 8 oz (236 mL) Hot drinks only. Not on the board, but every store has the cup. Good for a stronger-tasting latte or a kid’s hot chocolate.
Tall 12 oz (354 mL) The “small.”
Grande 16 oz (473 mL) The default when a recipe is quoted.
Venti hot 20 oz (591 mL) Same espresso as a grande in most milk drinks, so it tastes milder.
Venti cold 24 oz (709 mL) Gets an extra shot over the hot venti.
Trenta 30 oz A US size for select iced drinks. Don’t count on it in Canadian stores.

Espresso shots by size

Drink type Short Tall Grande Venti hot Venti iced
Lattes, mochas, macchiatos, cappuccinos 1 1 2 2 3
Caffè Americano 1 2 3 4 4
Shaken espressos – 2 3 – 4
Flat white (ristretto shots) 2 2 3 3 –

This table explains the most common complaint: “my venti latte tastes weak.” A hot venti latte has the same two shots as a grande, just with more milk. If you like it stronger, order a grande with an extra shot. It costs less and tastes better.

Syrup pumps by size

Size Hot drinks Iced drinks
Short 2 –
Tall 3 3
Grande 4 4
Venti 5 6

Too sweet? Ask for half the pumps. A grande with two pumps of vanilla instead of four still tastes like vanilla, just without the syrup hit. Sauces like mocha and white mocha follow the same counts.

How the core drinks are built (grande)

Caffè Latte

Two shots of Signature espresso, steamed 2% milk, a thin layer of foam. Hot or iced. Swap in blonde espresso for something smoother and a little brighter.

Cappuccino

Two shots with less milk and much more foam than a latte, so the cup feels light. Ask for “wet” for more milk or “dry” for more foam.

Flat White

Three ristretto shots (shorter, sweeter pulls) with steamed whole milk and a thin microfoam layer, finished with a latte-art dot. It’s stronger and creamier than a latte the same size.

Caramel Macchiato

Built upside down compared with a latte: four pumps of vanilla syrup go in first, then steamed milk, then two shots poured on top, then a crosshatch of caramel drizzle. Order it “upside down” if you want it stirred like a latte.

Caffè Mocha

Four pumps of mocha sauce, two shots, steamed milk and whipped cream. “No whip” is the easiest way to cut calories.

Caffè Americano

Three shots topped with hot water. Ask for “room” if you add milk. Iced, it’s the cheapest strong cold coffee on the menu.

Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso

Three blonde shots shaken with brown sugar syrup and ice, topped with oat milk and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Shaking chills the espresso fast and gives it a light froth.

Cold Brew and Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew

Cold brew is steeped for hours in cold water, so it’s smooth and low in acid. The sweet cream version adds vanilla syrup to the brew and floats a vanilla-cream layer on top.

Chai Tea Latte

Chai concentrate (black tea with cinnamon, clove, cardamom and ginger) mixed with steamed milk. Starbucks Canada switched to a new premium chai recipe in spring 2026. Add a shot of espresso and you’ve got a “dirty chai.”

Matcha Latte

Matcha powder whisked into milk, hot or iced. In 2026 Canadian stores also added protein-boosted options, including a Caramel Protein Matcha.

Pink Drink

Strawberry Açaí Refresher base shaken with coconut milk and freeze-dried strawberries. Swap the base for Mango Dragonfruit and you have a Dragon Drink.

Pumpkin Spice Latte (seasonal)

Two shots, steamed milk and four pumps of pumpkin sauce, finished with whipped cream and pumpkin spice topping. It usually returns in late August. If you want it less sweet, try the Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew instead.

Customizations worth knowing

  • Milk: 2% is the default. Whole, nonfat, oat, almond, soy and coconut are standard. Breve means steamed half-and-half.
  • Extra hot / kids’ temp: Milk steamed hotter or cooler than standard.
  • Light ice: More drink, less ice. Good value on iced lattes.
  • Ristretto or long shots: Ristretto is shorter and sweeter, long is more bitter and caffeinated.
  • Cold foam: Whipped cold milk on top of iced drinks. Flavoured versions rotate by season.
  • Affogato-style: A shot poured over a Frappuccino.

How to order like you know what you’re doing

Baristas build drinks in a set order, so saying it the same way gets you a faster, more accurate cup: iced or hot, size, number of shots (if changing), syrup, milk, other changes, drink name. For example: “Iced grande, two pumps vanilla, oat milk, light ice latte.”

A local’s take on Starbucks in Metro Vancouver

Love it or not, Starbucks is part of the coffee map here. There’s a Starbucks near almost every SkyTrain station, mall and commuter corridor in the region, which is exactly where the chain thrives. It’s the reliable bathroom-and-Wi-Fi stop, the place that’s open at 5 a.m. near the Horseshoe Bay ferry, and the easiest app order when you’re running late for the Canada Line.

But if you’re standing in a Starbucks in Gastown, Mount Pleasant or on Commercial Drive, you’re probably a two-minute walk from an independent cafe pulling something more interesting. Our Vancouver cafe guides show where they are.

Frequently asked questions

How many shots are in a grande latte at Starbucks?

Two. A tall has one, and a hot venti also has two. An iced venti has three.

How many pumps of syrup are in a grande?

Four, for both hot and iced drinks.

What’s the strongest coffee at Starbucks?

By caffeine, brewed blonde roast and cold brew rank near the top. For espresso drinks, a grande Americano (three shots) or a grande flat white (three ristretto shots) gives the most espresso per cup.

Is there a Starbucks secret menu?

Not officially. “Secret menu” drinks are customizations of existing ingredients. Order them by listing the changes, not the nickname, since baristas aren’t trained on the names.
