Three Downtown Vancouver Starbucks Locations Close as Chain Cuts 250 Stores
Downtown Vancouver has fewer places to grab a Starbucks this week. Three locations in the city’s core closed permanently over the weekend, part of a wave of 250 closures the coffee giant announced across North America.
The shuttered downtown stores are at 960 Seymour Street, 891 Dunsmuir Street and 125 Davie Street. A fourth Metro Vancouver location, at 2201 Holdom Avenue in Burnaby, also closed, bringing the confirmed B.C. total to eight.
Where the Downtown Closures Are
Each of the three downtown cafes served a slightly different crowd.
The Seymour Street store sat near Nelson Street, just a few doors from a neighbourhood grocery store, and drew a steady mix of office workers and residents from the surrounding towers.
The Dunsmuir Street location, on the corner near Hornby Street, was a quick stop for commuters heading to and from the heart of the business district. It sits across from the former Brandi’s Show Lounge, which has also closed.
The Davie Street cafe in Yaletown, near Marinaside Crescent and close to the seawall, was a popular stop for walkers, cyclists and locals in one of the city’s busiest waterfront neighbourhoods.
As of Sunday, outdoor signage had already been taken down at all three spots, though the interiors still looked like working Starbucks cafes. There is no word yet on what will move into any of the spaces.
A Farewell Note on the Door
Customers who showed up at the closed stores found an identical notice taped to each door. “This week, we made the very difficult decision to close this Starbucks location,” it begins.
The message goes on to acknowledge that the cafe was part of people’s daily routines and says the company is working to support its employees, whom Starbucks calls partners, through the change. A QR code at the bottom directs customers to other nearby locations.

More closures may still come to light, since Starbucks has not said how many of the 250 affected stores are in Canada.
Why Starbucks Is Closing Stores
Starbucks announced the cuts on September 24 in a letter to employees from chief operating officer Mike Grams. The closures are tied to roughly US$300 million in restructuring and represent about one per cent of the company’s more than 18,000 coffeehouses in North America.
According to the letter, the stores chosen were ones where the company didn’t believe it could consistently deliver the experience it wants, or where it saw no realistic route to acceptable financial results.
Employees at the closed stores will be offered transfers to other locations wherever possible. Those who can’t be placed will receive severance.
Grams noted that Starbucks closes and opens cafes every year as part of managing its portfolio, and said the company is building a pipeline of new locations across North America.
Second September in a Row
This isn’t the first time Vancouver coffee drinkers have seen a round of fall closures. In late September 2025, eight Metro Vancouver Starbucks stores shut down, including locations at Richlea Square in Richmond, on Denman Street, in Port Moody and in Surrey. None of those addresses appear on this year’s list.
Not All Bad News: Openings and Upgrades
While some doors are closing, Starbucks has also been adding locations in Vancouver. A new cafe opened at Parq Vancouver this spring, and another opened at Canada Place the spring before.
The company is also putting money into its existing stores. Across North America, Starbucks says it plans to complete at least 1,500 “coffeehouse uplifts” by the end of fiscal 2026. The redesigns add more artwork, greenery, comfortable seating and power outlets, and bring back ceramic mugs and glassware for customers who stay, along with self-serve condiment bars.
Three Metro Vancouver locations are already getting the treatment:
- Scott Road and 72nd Avenue, Surrey
- Royal Square, New Westminster
- Westgate Centre, Maple Ridge
Work on those renovations is underway and expected to continue into 2027.
